In that an international consensus of experts and doctors — as well as politicians from most stripes — agree with this approach, Scheer’s reluctance to support the government roared his ambivalence. When I was writing my last book, “Epiphany,” I interviewed a number of men and women who had undergone various forms of conversion theory, and there are perhaps as many as 20,000 in Canada alone.

The son of a Roman Catholic deacon, he is a committed and conservative believer and like Jason Kenney is on the right of the Church. In fact many in his party certainly do, but Scheer is being a little disingenuous when he allows MPs Lisa Raitt or Michelle Rempel to wave the rainbow flag. Step forward Andrew Scheer, who appears to spend as much time defending his own positions as he does attacking those of his opponents. If someone is morally, religiously, and scientifically certain that abortion is the killing of a child, should we believe them when they tell us that once they have the opportunity and power to prevent or reduce abortion they simply won’t do so? Scheer hasn’t used the latter hyperbole, but he has certainly associated with people who do.This leads to two inevitable, invincible questions. Frankly I don’t think a Conservative government would reopen the discussion because the country has moved on, Toronto and Quebec in particular would be aghast and even a large part of Scheer’s party and caucus would be outraged. Conservative leader Andrew Scheer is in a very difficult position. Let’s put to rest the myth there is any answer Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer can give that will satisfy the Liberals, and the liberal media, that he is not homophobic. That he would not ban same-sex marriage if he becomes prime minister.Scheer can’t prove a negative. That simply doesn’t make sense. The spin machine went into action only hours after the Leader of the Opposition’s position became clear last week. Imagine what that does to you.”.There are various forms of this alleged therapy but they are all based on the premise that homosexuality is undesirable, a product of nurture rather than nature and that people can be “cured.” The implication is obvious, and runs against all that Canada embraces scientifically, morally and politically. The only way he could prove it is to become prime minister and uphold same-sex marriage.Marching in a gay pride parade wouldn’t change the Liberal/liberal media narrative about Scheer, because he would be accused of doing it for reasons of political expediency. The Liberal/liberal media attack on Scheer post-election — basically that he’s a closet homophobe — has replaced the Liberal/liberal media narrative pre-election, orchestrated by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, that Scheer was a closet racist and white supremacist sympathizer.Nothing Scheer said on that controversy derailed the Liberal/liberal media narrative that he hadn’t satisfactorily addressed the issue — no matter how many times he denounced racism and white supremacism, no matter how many times the Conservatives cited the flimsy evidence on which the accusation was based. And so the media kept pounding him on it, over and over again. What killed it was the revelation during the campaign by an American media outlet (Time magazine) that Trudeau had committed the racist act of donning blackface — actually blackbody in his case — as a 29-year-old adult, while employed as a teacher.Given that revelation, and the subsequent exposure that he had done it at least two other times, Trudeau’s accusation that Scheer was a closet racist quickly died on the vine, given its breathtaking hypocrisy. On the issue of abortion, the Liberal/liberal media narrative accepted that Trudeau, as a Catholic, could be opposed to abortion (as he acknowledged in a 2011 Canadian Press story), while simultaneously being committed to defending a woman’s right to an abortion.Trudeau has since said his thinking on this issue has evolved, but the relevant point is there is nothing Scheer can say today that will put a dent in the Liberal/liberal media narrative that if he ever becomes PM, he could move against a woman’s right to an abortion.Again, Scheer can’t prove a negative. He also never said that he would whip his cabinet not to vote for pro-life motions or bills nor did he say he himself would not vote for them either.”,Opponents of abortion went on to support Scheer during the contest, and their votes were—to the surprise and often chagrin of many—sufficient to catapult him above Maxime Bernier in the 13.This is all rather different from Stephen Harper, who is often misread, especially by his critics.
