Oh my goodness! The horror is quiet most of the novel, but brutal when it happens.
The "monsters" are as complicated as the waterways in this Southern lowland. I miss The Casket family and I only finished the book a few minutes ago. I like that the characters are vivid and flawed, with often inscrutable motivations. It is, you might say, as if The Shadow over Innsmouthwas written as a generational family saga set in rural Alabama. The crisscrossing currents of emotional manipulation between Mary-Love and her daughter-in-law Elinor as the latter subtly begins her ascent to the Caskey throne forms the central conflict in the first half of the series. "Rutherfurd clearly does a lot of research, but a lot of it feels like a tourist's view of Parisian history, hitting all the highlights and the major attractions but never delving too deeply.
