Tropical Storm Arlene formed near Honduras on June 8 and moved northwards. Instead of moving in a more northerly direction and missing Florida, as most previous tropical cyclones have done from that position, it moved slightly north of due west as a strong high-pressure ridge to the north prevented a northward turn. Irma started to intensify rapidly as it moved over the eastern Atlantic. At the Mississippi unit of Gulf Islands, Katrina’s 17- to 35-foot (5.2- to 10.7-m) storm surge and 130 mile-per-hour (209-kph) winds flowed over the barrier island, redistributing sand, removing vegetation, denuding trees, submerging part of East Ship Island, and truncating Horn Island. But as Katrina moved slowly over the northern Bahamas, a strong ridge of the high pressure to the north forced it to curve towards the west. Arlene was responsible for only one death and minor damages.

[10], In the Florida Panhandle, the storm dropped heavy rainfall, peaking at 8.51 inches (216 mm) in Plantation Bay, Florida in Flagler County. Damage on the panhandle totaled to $3.5 million (2005 USD), $2.5 million of which was in Fort Pickens alone.

The storm finally became extratropical on June 13 just northeast of Flint, Michigan and was absorbed by a larger system the next day. Most amazing aspects: I was surprised to see a record number of named storms, 28, a record number of hurricanes, 15, and a record tropical energy index that was 285 percent of the median value. What’s her record? On July 4th in 2005, Dennis formed as a tropical wave near the southern Windward Islands. Nevertheless, it brought destructive wind and tidal surges into the western Florida panhandle, along with heavy rain, with less intense wind/rain in the eastern Florida panhandle. The final storm of the season, Tropical Storm Zeta, from late December into early January 2006, formed a full month after the official end of hurricane season  Nov. 30. var month=mydate.getMonth()

There were a record 15 hurricanes, and more than 3,900 people were killed in several countries. Although 2005 was an unprecedentedly active season, and no doubt would still have been one of the most destructive on record, would we still be reflecting on that season in at all the same way without the catastrophic mismanagement that accompanied Katrina? The storm weakened as it continued to move north over the United States, becoming extratropical on June 13. The center turned to a backup list of names using the Greek alphabet, such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. According to the NHC, Hurricane Irma was at its peak intensity of 155 knots, a Category 5 hurricane, for all three of those landfalls. Wilma, which hit southwestern Florida on Oct. 24, 2005, was the last major hurricane to hit the USA. While Arlene was over Cuba a tropical storm watch was issued for the Gulf Coast from Morgan City, Louisiana to Indian Pass, Florida. Even though  a few more storms are potentially brewing in the Atlantic, this year's hurricane season is likely to remain on the quiet side, mainly because of El Niño, which tends to decrease Atlantic hurricane activity. Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest hurricanes on record, responsible for killing more than 1,830 people, and by far the costliest hurricane in U.S. history, causing more than $108 billion in damage, in 2005 dollars. [10], Upon making landfall, the storm produced storm tides of up to 3.9 feet (1.2 m) in height.

By 12 a.m. UTC on Aug. 30, the NHC noted that satellite images showed a well-defined surface circulation on the system and said it likely became a tropical depression around that time. There had been several studies showing New Orleans faced a flooding disaster if exposed to a major hurricane. In August and September, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita made landfall near parks along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Why 2005 was so active: Very warm sea surface temperatures across the Atlantic basin, including the Gulf of Mexico, played a key role in fueling not only the number of storms but also the more intense ones. A tropical storm warning was issued for a stretch of coast slightly further east than the area covered by the preceding watch, and a hurricane watch was issued for the central section of this region.

It was completely unprecedented and almost unthinkable at the time. [10], The remnants of Arlene combined with a non-tropical system caused heavy rainfall across New York, with some locations reporting 6 to 7 inches (150 to 175 mm) of precipitation in a 2-hour period. It also became a hurricane farther east than any other system on record. The storm ended up making a total of seven landfalls.

The rainfall collected into streams and rivers, with some officials calling it a 1 in 500 year flood. Katrina retained hurricane status until it was ready to move off the extreme southwest coast of Florida on August 26, when it dropped down to just below hurricane force. That was a mistake, as a couple of people were killed when hurricane-force winds resumed after the eye passed.

The hurricane moved slowly at first, only about 10 MPH, then started to accelerate its forward motion. Other weather records were set that year: most hurricanes, 15; and a record six of them hit the USA.
