It’s like all the efforts and sacrifices of the good guys won’t ever lead them to victory — to a life that isn’t filled with blood and violence. For those anime that decide to kick logic to the curb and do the impossible, mecha can be a great vehicle to imaginative storytelling and unbelievable fantasies. Magic Knight Rayearth is often referred to as a fantasy anime. Instead of being another shounen or mecha with a male lead, this show put a trio of women to the fore. But which shows have left a lasting legacy?

Already, this is pretty incredible, but what makes DieBuster even wilder is its size. They're not possible with today's science, sure, but they are engineering feats that are possible given better technology. Also, Hiroyuki Sawano did the score for them. Yes, I have two Gundam entries in my top five. Missing Gundam, Macross, GiTS, Patlabor or Mazinger? Same goes for its immersive fight sequences. The series debuted in 1988 with a seven-episode OVA, and went on with a 47-episode TV series and two downright amazing films, which involved greats like Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon. This bio-organic monstrosity looks at first like just a reptilian mecha, but these machines clearly have a ton of strange weaknesses.

But like the latter, it’s an OVA composed of six feature-length episodes. So, how did this almost enter the top 10? Especially once you’ve moved to the second season. Plus, the animation and score are amazing. The main antagonist of the series, the Devil Gundam is a colossal multi-tiered machine with tons of robots inside of itself. That’s an accomplishment in itself: not all great anime shows get the attention they deserve. Oh, and it can apparently grow into space colonies like a giant tree, almost. Their design is unusual, at times creepy, and awe-aspiring at the same time. The music was catchy and it was awesome seeing the five good guys come together as one giant robot. My country has a generation of children(and their annoyed parents) who watched this every night on local TV.

Patlabor: The Mobile Police is an old gem that younger anime fans should check out. Mecha is a science fiction term for a large walking vehicle or robot, including ones on treads and animal shapes.

Mecha has the power to inspire wonder in people of all ages. This culminates with one of the pilots, Hikaru, becoming a literal God of the Universe. Video games, movies, TV shows, cartoons, anime, toys, comics and so much more. The fusion of esoteric themes, postmodernism, angst-ridden teens and giant robots are integral to one of the best mecha animes … It's powerful enough to throw literal galaxies like freaking shuriken! Studio Bones did not disappoint: Although the mecha fights are sparse, they are a sight to behold.

The Origin is a more recent project than Unicorn, having debuted in 2015. Though the movies get a little weird, the two television shows boast some of the best storytelling and mecha designs that Gundam has ever had. It’s like a seven-part movie series.

Don’t make the mistake of watching bad mecha/robot anime! With a third season on the way, Knights of Sidonia is one of the last generation’s sleeper mecha hits. Steampunk giant anime mecha. Both girls get involved with Alto Saotome, a pilot protecting the Frontier, just as a new alien threat known as the Vajra appear.
